Adding impact to your collaborative, learner-led online intercultural exchange process (Spring 2024)

How can you promote intercultural, group learning and collaboration through a process oriented approach in VIS? What are best practices to cultivate student engagement to create impact and successfully achieve learning goals? How can you apply monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, and ensure quality control in virtual international collaboration?

Join this training to learn about designing a quality learner experience with measurable impact through monitoring and evaluation. This interactive training offers a deep-dive into Virtual Exchange pedagogy, the role of group process and facilitative teaching online, as well as hands-on tools for quality control and opportunities to reflect on the educator’s role in VIS.

What to expect? 

The advanced teacher training consist of four weeks of self-study combined with live online group training sessions, with a combined estimated 4-4.5 hours of weekly workload. In the four training modules, participants will gain a deeper understanding of designing and evaluating an effective, collaborative, learner-led online exchange process.  

Week 1: Introduction to the Virtual Exchange pedagogy & design 

  • Gain knowledge on the Virtual Exchange pedagogy and its benefits for VIS; 
  • Explore the teacher role in a learner-led, collaborative Virtual Exchange approach; 
  • Increase your understanding of the role technology plays in successful design and implementation of effective VIS projects; 
  • Deepen your knowledge on how to design successful virtual intercultural learning processes for your VIS; 

Week 2: Adding impact to the learning process 

  • Increase understanding on the goals and possibilities for student learning in VIS; 
  • Deepen your understanding on how to ensure student skill development throughout the VIS;  
  • Learn about ways to promote synchronous and asynchronous engagement in the VIS to achieve learning goals; 
  • Explore challenges in designing successful virtual intercultural learning and collaboration in VIS;  

Week 3: Monitoring and evaluation in VIS process design 

  • Learn about tools for monitoring and evaluation to assess impact in your VIS; 
  • Gain knowledge on methods for successful quality control;  
  • Explore best practices of this collaborative, learner-led intercultural exchange approach;  
  • Further build your design skills by mapping the ‘monitoring and evaluation’ for your VIS project. 

Week 4: Dive Deeper

  • Gain knowledge on how to collaborate with other teaching staff on successful VIS projects; 
  • Deepen your virtual exchange expertise by learning about the application of the different monitoring and evaluation methods for VIS; 
  • Explore best practices of this collaborative, learner-led intercultural exchange approach;   
  • Complete the collaborative design project and finalize your ‘Design Lab’ assignment. 

We use the platforms Canvas and Zoom.

What will you get out of it?

You will learn how to: 

  • use Virtual Exchange pedagogy in your VIS project to engage students and cultivate intercultural learning and collaboration; 
  • set tailored learning goals for a VIS project
  • design engaging virtual intercultural collaborative learning experiences by combining asynchronous and synchronous components; 
  • apply different monitoring and evaluation methods for VIS; 
  • adopt and harness the benefits of a facilitative teaching approach.

Participants will also gain first-hand experience with the tools covered in the training through collaborative, action-oriented assignments and exercises focussing on the design and implementation of VIS projects.  By the end of the training, participants should be able to design and facilitate a VIS project including a sustained student exchange that promotes group-learning, encourages 21st-Century skill building like reflection and self-awareness, and creates a space for deep learning.

Registration

Are you interested? Then register before May 10, 2024. You can choose from an English training on four Tuesday afternoons: May 28, June 4, 11 and 18 from 15:00 to 17:00 or a Dutch or English training on four Thursday afternoons: May 30, June 6, 13 and 20 from 15:00 to 17:00 (language offered depending on registration). Participation is free of charge, with a valid VIS ID. We look forward to seeing you!

Please note that only one person from each VIS project may attend one of the available training courses for teachers. So consider carefully which training course interests you. If you want to register, keep your VIS project ID at hand.
